About my background and philosophy of teaching.
With over 30 years of experience in classical guitar, both as a performer and teacher, I bring a wealth of knowledge and passion to my students. My journey began with a Certificate of Achievement from the Los Angeles Music and Arts School, followed by extensive studies at Pasadena City College and USC’s prestigious School of Music. I’ve performed at a variety of events, ranging from intimate weddings to university recitals, and I’ve shared my love of music through teaching both in the United States and abroad. Currently residing and teaching Classical Guitar in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Classical Guitar Instructor
2000 – Present*
Private Lessons and Group Classes: I have been dedicated to teaching classical guitar to students of all levels, from beginners to advanced players. My approach combines technical mastery with musical expression, ensuring that each student not only learns to play but also develops a deep connection with the music.
Guitar Days at the Huntington: While working at the Huntington Library, I organized and performed in weekly guitar recitals, collaborating with other talented musicians to bring live music to the community.
Teaching Philosophy: My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that music is a lifelong journey. I strive to inspire my students to explore their own musical voices while providing them with the tools and techniques needed to achieve their goals.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
1983: Awarded Certificate of Achievement for Guitar from Los Angeles Music and Arts School.
1994: Awarded a music scholarship by the Pasadena Sunrise Rotary Club.
1994: Secured second place in a California state performance competition.
1996: Successfully auditioned and transferred to USC’s School of Music, studying under renowned guitarists Scott Tennant, William Kanengiser, and Brian Head.
1997: Performed a solo recital at CalTech University, Pasadena, CA.
2005: Initiated group guitar lessons at a local church in Eagle Rock, CA, fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment.
2007: Traveled to Chile for advanced studies with Ximena Matamorros, head of the guitar department at Universidad Católica de Chile, focusing on her original compositions.
2017: Received an Award with Distinction for the Trinity Guitar performance examination.
2020-2024: Active member of Classical Guitar Corner Academy, recently completing their highest level, Grade 8. I continue to perform at local venues and teach privately, sharing my passion for classical guitar with the community.
